RBI’s Announcement on ₹500 Notes
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has recently made an important announcement regarding ₹500 notes. There has been confusion on social media about star-marked notes, with some claiming that these notes are fake. However, the RBI has clarified that these notes are genuine, and there is no issue in using them. This statement aims to dispel the misinformation surrounding these notes.
Are Star-Marked ₹500 Notes Real?
The RBI has confirmed that the viral claims about star-marked notes being fake are false. The circulation of ₹500 notes has become a topic of discussion, especially after the government discontinued ₹2000 notes. The introduction of star-marked notes has further fueled public concern, prompting the RBI to clarify their authenticity.
What Has RBI Stated?
According to the RBI, ₹500 notes with a star (*) symbol are completely genuine. These notes contain a three-letter prefix followed by a star mark. The star-marked notes are issued in denominations ranging from ₹10 to ₹500. The presence of the star mark indicates that the note has been reprinted as a replacement for a defective note during the printing process. There is no need for concern, as these notes are fully valid for transactions.
History of Star-Marked Notes
The RBI introduced star-marked notes in 2006. Initially, this system was used only for ₹10, ₹20, and ₹50 notes. Over time, it was extended to higher denominations. These notes are issued in standard currency bundles with a strip indicating the presence of star-marked notes, making them easily identifiable.
Why Are Star-Marked Notes Printed?
Star-marked notes are issued as replacements for defective notes found during the printing process. The RBI ensures that each bundle contains 100 notes, and if any note is found to be defective, it is replaced with a star-marked note. The Star Series was introduced to maintain the validity and reliability of the currency.
If you receive a star-marked note, there is no need to worry, as these notes hold the same value as regular currency and are completely legal.
